Ok, I'm going to open myself up to the flame here. But I want to know, I haven't heard anyone address it, and I couldn't go to the panel at Wiscon, at which I probably would not have felt right speaking in the first place.

Re: cultural appropriation. Putting aside that I am putatively white and therefore a problematic source for this question, how does one balance the need to create worlds with many cultural identities, where many races and sexualities and POVs are represented with depth and resonance (i.e. no magical anythings) and avoid Firefly-like blunders where the universe is white-with-a-little-black-for-flavor, with the idea that it is in large or small sense wrong to appropriate (i.e. use for literary benefit)  from cultures not the author's own?
