All Is Hardcore, When Made With Love

We have a phrase in our house and the phrase is this:

I got so excited, I bit Sage in the face.

This is Sage. She is my fluffy golden retriever.

is Grimm. She is my german shepherd.

Whenever something awesome or upsetting happens, Grimm bites Sage in the face. Not hard, but she bites her. She puts Sage's whole snout in her mouth sometimes. Someone comes to visit? Bite Sage in the face. Time for dinner? Bite Sage in the face. A juicy bone? Bite Sage in the face. Sage is happy and dancing about? Bite her in the face. Grimm will often make a 180 degree turn in order to bite Sage in the face. She will literally turn around and go looking for Sage, in order to bite her in the face. No action is complete without and equal and opposite biting of Sage in the face. Sage doesn't seem to mind...much.

So we say this a lot, when something good happens, because it's the most over the top expression of joy we can think of.

At some point in the night, Palimpsest hit #193 on Amazon, and #6 in contemporary fantasy. #10 in general fantasy. Beating out dozens of books with leather pants on the cover. The only book in the top 10 not part of a popular urban fantasy series. It's holding at #256 right now. These are the kind of numbers where it starts to Matter what your rank is.

I got so excited, I bit Sage in the face.

None of my books have ever ranked so high before. The Orphan's Tales topped out at about #2k each. This is ridiculously high for a literary, funky book by a relative unknown. Will it go higher? I don't know, I never thought it could go this high. I've been refreshing like a lab mouse with a cheese-producing bar. The possibility of 2 digits is in sight. That would be...a triumph beyond what I could have imagined for this little book. What does that mean for actual sales? We mere mortals are not permitted to know Amazon's algorithms. But it's good, it's really good.

Do you know what that means? What it really means?

It means that all of our tribal activity and mad striving works. It works as much and more than a corporate machine. We, you and me, can move mountains. Every time that book goes up over a Charlaine Harris or a Terry Goodkind, it's saying to publishers: these kinds of books can succeed. Do not stop buying them. Do not assume they are doomed. Love conquers all. For real and for serious.

Of course I care because it's my book and I need it to do well in order to keep having a job. But I care for your books, too. The weird, graceful, literary ones you want to sell, that you're working on, that you believe in. If one of us does well, we all do. Co-operate and graduate as my old professors used to say.

I am the luckiest girl in the entire world. As if it weren't enough that my favorite singer writes songs for me. All of you are amazing people, and seeing you come together around a book I made is humbling and awe-inspiring. Thank you. Thank you for your posting and your purchasing and your help and your love. This world is an extraordinary place.
