I agree completely, but of course I have to caveat: There are a few examples of "Fantasy" that are actually SF-ish "what if" - Gregory Keyes's Newton's Cannon ("what if Newton's alchemical investigations paid off?") or Christopher Stasheff's A Wizard in Rhyme ("what if magic came from poetry?").

thank youuuu, had never heard of Stasheff at all and that sounds great, or at least more enjoyable than Spellwright's take on it
