A Monstrous Manifesto

For everyone who was at Strowlercon and asked for it, and all those who weren't but might want it, here is the poem I read on Friday night. It is my gift to Strowlerfolk, you may reproduce it free, forever.

If you are a monster, stand up.
If you are a monster, a trickster, a fiend,
If you’ve built a steam-powered wishing machine
If you have a secret, a dark past, a scheme,
If you kidnap maidens or dabble in dreams
Come stand by me.

If you have been broken, stand up.
If you have been broken, abandoned, alone
If you have been starving, a creature of bone
If you live in a tower, a dungeon, a throne
If you weep for wanting, to be held, to be known,
Come stand by me.

If you are a savage, stand up.
If you are a witch, a dark queen, a black knight,
If you are a mummer, a pixie, a sprite,
If you are a pirate, a tomcat, a wright,
If you swear by the moon and you fight the hard fight,
Come stand by me.

If you are a devil, stand up.
If you are a villain, a madman, a beast,
If you are a strowler, a prowler, a priest,
If you are a dragon come sit at our feast,
For we all have stripes, and we all have horns,
We all have scales, tails, manes, claws and thorns
And here in the dark is where new worlds are born.
Come stand by me.

Thank you. For this, for the night, for all of it.

I may repost this in my LJ, then?

secret, scheme, kidnap maidens, dabble in dreams
been alone, been starving
weep for wanting, to be held, to be known
a savage, fight the hard fight
a villain, a beast, a strowler, a prowler

...right on.

That is amazing. Thanks for posting for those of us who couldn't be there.

Oh, thank you for sharing for those of us who were there in spirit but not the flesh.

So beautiful.
Still standing.

Hi!
I am a newbie to posting, comment e.t.c. on blogs but I have to start so I try here and hope you approved my comment.
It´s a very nice picture of the bird and I just wundering if it is a oil painting picture!

Stand up! up! up! Raise da roof!

In some ineffable way, this reminds me of Shel Silverstein.
That is intended as the highest compliment, in case that is unclear.

Re: Stand up! up! up! Raise da roof!

I may have nicked the rhyme scheme. ;)

I really loved that. I definitely loved the last part.
"For we all have stripes, and we all have horns,
We all have scales, tails, manes, claws and thorns
And here in the dark is where new worlds are born.
Come stand by me."
Loved it and thank you so much for sharing. :D

I have a new you-necklace! :)

Love it! Thanks for sharing :)

I love you.
You are one of those lovely people who are calling me back to myself again and due to the drive, I missed this on Friday, but I am so glad to have it now!

*HUG*

I am standing with you. :) <3

I love this. Thank you for posting it here so we who could not go that night could read it.
This is relevant to my week actually. I have to write poems about the Shadow in my introduction to writing poetry class.
I instantly thought of The Night Garden and your poems on Goblin Fruit for some reason when I started reading my assignment.
Sorry for the ramble.
As I am a person with a secret this spoke to me.

That is a very good poem. Sort of reaches into you and grabs something vital, as the best poems do.

Oh. My. God. I love this poem so much. I needed something like this today.

Oh wow. I've always loved Silverstein's Invitation but I think I like this one even better! Well done.

Thank you. That is a beautiful thing.

All day I've felt like someone gave me something really wonderful. Which you did.
